Money Matters

I’ve heard of a church that had undertaken a major building project and were struggling in their capital campaign for the project. The pastor came to the congregation one day and said, 'I have good news for you! We have all the money we need for this building project!!!! But there is one problem: that money is still in your pockets!’

Unlike this Pastor, we thank God for many of you who have given sacrificially and consistently. Last year we had a major debt of about 9 million shillings as a result of our 2007 move. We prayed together and several of you joined the Team 200 that made various financial pledges to help offset the 9M debt.

Teams 200 were able to raise approximately 7M, which was over and above our normal tithes and offerings. Our debt currently stands at about 2M! ASANTE SANA Team 200! May God honour you for the sacrifices many of you made in order to give generously towards our corporate financial need in 2008.  We are confident before God that we can clear the outstanding 2M before June 2009 as more pledges come in.

Our 2009 monthly budget is 4.8M. Looking at the graph overleaf, you can see that we have started well but have a little distance to go in meeting our target.

We believe that if each of us faithfully tithed to the work of God, we would not have any shortfalls in our budget and we would be able to do much more, including giving  others in need outside of the Nairobi Chapel family.

The word “tithe” comes from an Old English root meaning “one tenth.” It is interesting to note that in Old Testament times, 10 percent was never the “basic standard” or “starting point” for faithful giving. The law actually called for three different tithes, adding up to 23.3 percent of a family's income. In addition, the law anticipated an array of other obligatory sacrifices and free will offerings (e.g., Leviticus 1-7).

Think about it, if the Israelites—who had not been given the gift of the Holy Spirit—were called to give such a significant portion of their incomes in grateful obedience to the God who saved them, why should our commitment to Christ today when we, as Christians in an age of unprecedented prosperity, aim for 10 percent? Regardless of whether we are rich or poor, gainfully employed or buried in debt, the command to love God without reservation is the ultimate standard that should gauge our giving. And our model is God himself: “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all” (Romans 8:32a). (Adapted from generousgiving.org).

We thank you for your continued generosity and ask that you continue to do so in 2009. Let us grow in the grace of giving this year. 2 Cor 9:7-8 ‘Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all time, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.’
