BULLETIN 25th June 2006

Let Us Pray for Kenya

The Constitution : President Mwai Kibaki released the report of the Committee of Eminent Person charting a possible way forward for a constitution review, on 6 June. The President guaranteed Kenyans that a people-driven process will ensue. Pray that the President will reach out to the opposition in a genuine spirit of reconciliation; & that the opposition will reciprocate in the publics interest, and that partisan interests would not derail the process as they have done in the past.

Pray that the nation would go through true healing and that tribalism will cease to be the defining issue of our body politic. Pray that Kenyans will eventually get a good constitution that will guarantee a society that upholds justice for all, is governed by godly moral values and practices principles of good governance.

Economic Growth, Inequality And Corruption : The National Economic Survey launched recently by the Minister for Planning and National Development indicated that the economy grew by 5.8 % in 2005. This is a record for the last two decades. At the same time a Report by ActionAid International Kenya Office showed that Kenya continues to be among the most unequal countries in the world with a mere 10% of the population controlling 42% of the country's income while the bottom l0% control only 1%.

Soon after the ActionAid Report, Transparency International Kenya released its annual corruption perception index showing that corruption is still rampart in various government department's. This corruption undoubtedly contributes to the high levels of poverty and inequality.

Thank God for the increased economic activity and the impressive growth figures. But pray that economic growth would translate to development through the equitable sharing of the national cake. Especially, pray for wisdom for policy makers as they seek permanent solutions to structural causes of poverty and inequality.

Let's seek God's leading for our country, especially confessing the sin of corruption and abuse of office and praying for wisdom, humility and integrity among our leaders.
