Celebrating Kimuri Kids

“Nimepita, Pastor Faith!”, (I passed, Pastor Faith!) said the person on the other end of the phone call. It was clear from the excitement that the caller needed me to respond in a particular way. When I finally established that this was one of our children from Kimuri School, it was easy to jump into their joy pool and celebrate their 349 marks from their KCPE Exams.

You all remember the 74 children we walked with last year. Well, 22 of them had 300 marks and above from the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) Exams. For children who had come from trauma, who had lived in camps after being displaced from their homes due to the post-election clashes, who had moved to a new school and new setting, who had been away from their parents and families for a year and who had had to catch up with their studies and be up many early hours of the morning, we are celebrating these who, despite their circumstances did well.

While we took them back to their parents and families in December after their exams (and had a great party thrown for us in appreciation at 2 of the villages!), they still consider Nairobi Chapel an integral part of their lives. We are family to them and because of this, are prayerfully considering how we can still walk with them through their 4 years of high school. Last year, some of you did pledge and have come through with school fees support for those who have excelled and been accepted into Government schools. We still need to raise school fees for a number of those who have school fees deficits. Many of their families are still living in camps and are still looking for opportunities of resettlement. Their possibility of not being able to go into high school because of lack of school fees is very real. Would you be a position to support one of them through their 4 years of high school? Our commitment to them as we support them through this is: 1. Intentional mentoring and 2. For professionals who would meet with the students 3 times a year during their holidays.

Peter and Solomon are two brothers who did very well and are now in high school at Umoja Secondary School. Pastor Anne visited with them last week and was overwhelmed by their contagious excitement at the possibilities that will open to them because of their high school education. Two weeks ago, their father had spent two nights on the road and even walked from the city center to our offices to plead their case. Now, Peter’s dream of being a lawyer is ever more closer – because one of us here at the Nairobi Chapel wrote the check that secured his position and bought his uniform. We cannot abandon these children halfway down the journey. Allow that we walk with them, all the way! So, here is opportunity to be a Frontline Visionary! Are you IN?
