Kinara Program

One of Nairobi Chapel's enduring legacies over the last eighteen years has been what is simply known as the internship program, more recently titled "Kinara". Through the years we have walked with and mentored many young leaders that are now in key positions of service in various sectors of society, including corporate leadership, NGOs, business, government offices, and church. Several pastors of our sister and daughter church plants were first interns with us before they went on to plant churches.

Every year, we receive applications from fresh college graduates and commit to walk with them for one year. We facilitate their learning and training in ministry skills while they lend capacity to our pastors. In this process mentoring happens. We also try to sense what God is calling them into. If it is pastoral ministry, we offer them a chance to serve for a second year where they take on greater leadership responsibilities and exposure.

Last year we took on 23 interns. Cornelia Stuecklin returned to her country, Switzerland in June, and is now a pastor in a church there. Hasmik Babayan returned to Armenia in September. She is now working with the International Student Volunteer Movement.

When Mavuno Church was preparing to move to a new site we assigned some of our interns to them to lend them capacity, and  two we assigned  to  Mavuno Downtown who also needed staff capacity. We had nine interns who stayed with us through the year and are graduating today. We congratulate these nine and wish them God's blessings. Thank you to all of you who prayed, encouraged and financially supported them throughout 2008.

John Njega will continue on staff as a pastoral trainee, while George Kurea, who joined us mid-year, will continue with his internship into 2009.

Prayer

Please Pray With Me
In 2008, you the members asked that I travel less and be more present here at home . . . so I've said no to several speaking engagements - to Spain, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand; but still had to accept 4 strategic opportunities.

In March I will be at Mariners Church, Los-Angeles. This is a large congregation with keen interest in ministry partnerships in Kenya, and have invited us into a ministry relationship. My visit in March will be in preparation for a state-wide missions consultation in 2010. I will however preach at their Sunday service on 8th March. Mariners have also offered to finance a writer to work with me and help put together a book on missions.

In July Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Chicago has asked that I address a consultation of key mission leaders on Short Term Missions. They desire that I represent a Global South perspective. TEDS offered to give me 2 weeks accommodation and access to their extensive library for the writing of the book on missions.

In December URBANA, the big missions conference I addressed in 2006, has invited me back as a plenary speaker this year. This is very strategic as the conference gathers over 20,000 university students/ potential missionaries who subsequently scatter to all parts of the globe to serve the Lord. To have an African or Global South voice at the conference to shape their thinking is vitally important.

Please pray with me about these ministry engagements, and ask that the Lord empower me to speak well on behalf of the African Church.
