When the fighting gets fierce ...

He’s the man your mom told you to avoid. He’s the fellow the police routinely lock up. He’s deranged man who stalks neighborhoods and murders families. This is the face that fills the screen during the evening news.

Palestine didn’t know what to do with him. They restrained him, but he broke the chains. He ripped off his clothes. He lived in caves. He cut himself with rocks. He was absolutely no good to anyone. No one had a place for him - except Jesus. Even today the best that modern medicine could offer such a man is medication an extensive treatment. Maybe, with much time, expense, and professional help, such destructive behavior could be curtailed. But it would take years. With Jesus it would take seconds.

The encounter is explosive. The disciples’ boat beaches near a graveyard and a herd of pigs. Both are ritually and culturally unclean for Jews. As Jesus steps out, a crazy man storms out of a cavern. Wild hair. Blood wrists. Scratched skin. Fury encased in flesh. Naked bedlam. Arms flailing and voice screaming. The apostles gawk and gulp and put a foot back in the boat.

They are horrified. But Jesus isn’t and for just a few minutes the invisible conflict becomes visible.

I have a mental picture in my mental scrapbook. In it my father and I are battling a storm in a fishing boat. We are surrounded by a mountain range of white tops, taller than either of us. The coastline is hidden, the fog is thickening, and we are honestly beginning to wonder if we will make it back to shore.

I am young, may be nine. The boat is small, perhaps ten feet. And the waves are high, high enough to overturn our craft. The sky rambles, the clouds billow, and the lightning zigzags.
Dad has directed the boat toward the nearest beach, taking us bow first into the waves. He sits in the rear with a hand on the throttle and his face into the wind. I sit in the front looking back toward him. Rain stings my bare neck and soaks my shirt. One wave after another picks us up and slaps us down. I grab both sides of the boat and hang on.

In vain I search for the coast. It’s buried by fog. I look for the sun . . . it’s hidden by the clouds. I look for other boats . . . I see only waves. Everything I see frightens me. There is only one reassuring sight, the face of my father. Rain-splattered and grimacing, he peers into the storm. Water drips off the bill of his baseball cap, and his shirt is stuck to his skin.

Right then, I make a decision. I quit looking at the storm and watched only my father. It just made sense. Watching the waves brought fear; watching my father brought calm. So I focused on Dad. So intent was my gaze that three decades later I can still see him guiding us out of the billows.

God wants us to do the same. He wants us to focus our eyes on him. What good does it do to focus on the storm? Why study the enemy? We won’t defeat him. Only God will. Only God can.

Prayers

We praise the Lord for the things he has accomplished in us within the last three weeks as we prayed and fasted. We ask that you pray unceasingly for Nairobi Chapel and for our country Kenya even as we pass on the Prayer Torch to Green Pasture Tabernacle today.

We would like to appreciate those who were able to make it to the various corporate prayer meetings that ended with a Kesha on Friday night. May the Lord bless you.

Please note that we will have our Monthly Prayer meeting on Saturday, August 1 at 7.30am – 11.30am. Please plan to attend. This month we will have a session of worship here at the tent before proceeding for a prayer walk around Suna, Santack, Ngando and others as part of Mission Tujuane.

We would also like to invite those of you who feel a calling for intercession to join in the Intercessory ministry.

Please note that you can still share your experiences of the Lord’s working in your life during this month of prayer and fasting on julyprayer.blogspot.com. To request for writing on the blog please email julyprayerwarrior@gmail.com.
