Joseph: A Father, A Hero

(Matthew 1:18-25 & 2: 13-23)
As we celebrate the men (MEN by Design) after a beautiful service last Sunday, we also celebrate another hero in the Scriptures, Joseph the earthly father of Jesus but, is he a hero? Yes! He is the unsung hero and I thank God that Matthew inspired by the Holy Spirit was careful to record for us helpful insights into the character of this man in Scripture.

In this story Joseph is engaged to Mary but discovers that she is expectant and he's not responsible. For any man this is a crisis. But how does Joseph respond? Joseph did not want to disgrace her and thought out a quiet way of divorcing his wife. We must commend him for he did not want to devastate his fiancée. When the Lord chooses to communicate to him through a dream, he obeys and marries her because the pregnancy is part of God's plan to save the world.
We note that though Joseph must have been very young, probably in his early twenties. He was truly a righteous man. In him, we see a perfect combination of a sense of right and wrong, self-discipline and restraint, justice tempered with mercy, and obedience to the Word of God.

In Matthew 2:13, Joseph gets a second dream being warned by an angel to escape to Egypt since Herod had a devious plan to kill the baby. Joseph responds immediately and takes refuge in Egypt. We can learn from the young Joseph that a father must be courageous and willing to take risks and put his life on the line for the sake of his family. What influenced his actions?
He had a good grasp of Scripture and believed that this baby would play a significant role in future even though he probably did not understand the specifics and intricacies of that role. Therefore, it was important that this child is protected at whatever cost.

He was politically well informed and knew the danger that Herod posed. After the visit by the wise men, he may have guessed that it would be just a matter of time before Herod's soldiers came knocking on the door. He waited for instructions from God before he made his next move. He depended on God for direction and guidance. When he got the dream he knew it was time to act fast; the survival of his family depended on his prompt obedience.

Joseph was prepared to pay the price to raise God's son. The flight to Egypt must have been difficult and extremely dangerous. Making such a trip with a young child is difficult to imagine but, Joseph did not hesitate; he knew the Lord would protect and provide for them.

God's plan to rescue the world according to Matthew is fascinating. It was a perfect plot involving an ordinary young couple that achieves an extraordinary feat. Yes! A wise, young, responsible, courageous father actually outdid an old, experienced, evil and powerful king.

Pray also for corporate leaders, that they will be a witness for Christ in their positions. Pray that all men will have wisdom to make the right choices that honor God.

Pray that God will use  men to strengthen their families and bring up godly  children. Pray also for families that may be hurting because the men are absent, that God would provide other support structures for those.  Pray also that God would raise up the men of Nairobi chapel to uphold the vision and mission of this church.
