Something to dance about...

You should have seen the teachers and Head teacher of Jamhuri primary dancing with joy at the end of term three weeks ago! We, a small group of Nairobi Chapel volunteers were drawn into the euphoria of the moment as we danced with them. We had an enthusiastic crowd of children dance in worship as our team led in song after song, but it was the joy of the teachers that touched us the most.

Since 2006 we have had the privilege of going into the school each Wednesday during the term to teach the pastoral class. There are 1000 children in the school, many of whom come from Kibera and Ngado. The pastoral class is divided into Muslim, Catholic and Protestant groups. We go in teams of two into each class and, while we only meet the Protestants who number about 800, a quiet survey would reveal that our guitar attracts many others!

The Headmistress is a committed Christian whose prayer before she even arrived was that a church would 'own' the school. So she was delighted to find us there! On our first meeting with her we stressed our commitment to teach the children God's word, and pray that the students would grow spiritually and excel academically. She took us seriously.

The cause of such jubilant celebration this morning was that her school had just been placed in  third position out of 22 schools in the district sector mock exams. Each class had improved considerably, and she felt our presence in the school had made the difference! Remembering how devastated the school had been in the January clashes, and remembering how the teachers had forfeited regular teaching to focus on trauma counselling for the children, we knew this achievement was no small thing. Praise God that He has honoured His name at the school.

Academics aside we have been thrilled to hear the teachers say that the overall behaviour of the students has improved. As we have shared God's love we are convinced that there are many who have come to see themselves differently and to have hope for the future. The students have been honouring and attentive and many have made decisions to receive Christ (a total of 150 last year).

Thanks to so many of you who have personally supported this work. Through your help we have hosted a two day camp for the students each end of term. This has been a hit; we have also given a bible to each standard 8 student as they completed their primary education. In addition, your sponsorship has enabled us to include some of the students in our annual Kids Kamp, and many of you have given us support of presence and of prayer. Through your help last year we sponsored the 40 most needy students to school lunch (often the only meal of the day).  In short your support has enabled us to share a wholistic gospel.
So as we dance, dance with us . . .

Prayer

Leadership transition: We have many of the young leaders in our youth ministry transitioning to college (many overseas). Let’s pray that they will continue to have and grow in their passion for God and that they will continue to rise up to the Leadership opportunities that come their way.

There is a hunger for God, a Spirit of prayer and a passion for worship that is growing among our youth. Let’s thank God for this and pray that it would continue to flourish.

Pray for the Kimuri Pupil’s and for our social justice ministry as they prepare for  the transitioning and reintegration of the Children back home at the end of the year. That it shall be a smooth process and for the strength and capacity to be able to handle and deal with any huddles that may arise.

Pray for our personal spiritual lives that we would continue to grow and be firmly grounded in God’s Word and in the unity of the faith and fellowship through the Ekklesia groups, discipleship and in our ministry together as the Body of Christ - Eph 4:13.
